Coping suggestions
Today was my second day back to work since my surgery and I had a little problem. I am hoping that someone will have a suggestion.
Here is what happened
7am, I drank my protein drink
9am, I had a yogurt
I had a meeting at 10 that was only supposed to go an hour but instead went until 1:30. As the meeting dragged on and on and on, I started feeling like I was getting hypoglycemic. I usually eat at 11:30 or 12. By the end of the meeting one of my peers said I was grey and looked dreadful. I felt awful!!!
I couldn't have taken food or a protein shake into the meeting. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I could have coped with this different? Is there a drink that anyone can suggest that will help with the blood sugar thing? Unfortunately, this isn't a rare occurrence (my boss is very long winded!)
When you began to feel ill or nauseous that would have been the time to have excused yourself from the room for 5 minutes to go to your desk to eat something. If you had a diabetic condition you would do the same thing. Your boss (and anyone else, for that matter) doesn't have the right to keep you locked in a meeting to the point where you feel ill. So either taking something into the meeting with you has to be an option or, if it's not, then leaving the meeting for a short time is the only other alternative. If you explain your condition (and, seriously, becoming hypoglycemic from lack of food is a medical condition) your boss should understand. If he/she does not understand and objects, then you need to take it to a higher authority.
Hi - My boss is not a very understanding person. I didn't tell her about my surgery. It would have been hard to excuse myself since we were meeting with upper management and I am the "scribe" for the meetings. It's a sticky situation!
I don't want to drink a bunch of sugar but do you think a juice on these occasions is okay to take in with me? I can get away with a water bottle or coffee cup in meetings.
Tomorrow I have a 7am meeting that usually doesn't end until 9 so I am worried I am going to have the same problem.
Absolutely, if you can get away with bringing in a juice, definitely do that (and really, what rational person would deny you that?). Either a small orange juice (although there's just way too much sugar in OJ) or a bottle of cranberry juice which has less sugar. If you can just try to eat something before the meeting, that would help too - I occasionally eat a great protein bar called Protein 32 (the peanut butter is my favourite). It goes down very, very (i.e. too) easily but is very satisfying and would no doubt hold you over for a couple of hours, even if you only ate half. Best of luck ... and hopefully eventually you'll find what works. Whatever you do, though, don't let this stumbling block defeat you! There is ALWAYS a way to conquer the challenges of eating with the lapband!
If you can take a coffee cup in, just fill it with a protein shake instead of coffee! No-one would be any the wiser! Could that help?

Since you should be drinking all day long to get enough fluids in, taking a travel cup with you with a protein drink or crystal lite would be acceptable. Carry a few hard candies in your pocket to suck on if you need a little extra sugar.
